Chapter Twelve

SAM DUSTED off his hands, sat back on his haunches, and surveyed the new brick he’d laid on the twisting garden walkway of a client’s home. Yuri was at the other end of the yard, talking to some of their workers about plans for the afternoon. They’d be cutting back the roses and readying the rest of the perennials on the two-acre property for the upcoming winter.

He and Yuri had acknowledged each other cursorily that morning but hadn’t spoken since. Sam knew it was far past time. He fucked things up with Nathan, and he didn’t want to lose one of his best friends too.

It had been a hard night. Sam went to bed after Nathan left. He tried to sleep but couldn’t. He kept playing their conversation over in his head and wondering what the hell he’d been thinking. Nathan hadn’t answered his texts, but Sam couldn’t blame Nathan for ignoring him. He’d let his mouth run away from him—something he used to do when he was drinking. It was tempting to slip into those old patterns. Go out, get drunk, and find a guy to hook up with and take his mind off everything else.

Yuri came over, distracting Sam from his brooding thoughts. “Looking good,” he said with a yawn. His hair was messy, and he had five o’clock shadow so dark and thick it looked like it might become a beard at any moment.

“Thanks.” Sam stood and crossed his arms over his chest. The intricate spiraling brick probably should have been done in the spring, instead of the fall, but the homeowners were having a party and wanted everything perfect.

“You want to eat?”

“Yeah, I’m starving.”

Both of them were quiet over lunch. They talked about trivial things like the weather, though Sam noticed Yuri gave him a few furtive glances. He wondered which one of them would crack first. Usually Yuri was the adult, but today he was playing the role of Sam—silent and stubborn. Sam was tired of pretending everything was okay.

“So, how’re you doing?” he asked.

“I figured you heard. Rachel told you, right?”

Sam nodded. “She said you guys had a fight, and you were crashing at her place.”

“I told Michael about what happened.” Yuri blew out a sigh. “And then there was some other shit. It was pretty ugly.”

“Sounds like there’s something in the water.”

“You too?” Yuri gave him a curious look.

“Yeah. Relationships are a pain in the ass, aren’t they?”

“Yet they always seem so appealing when you’re single.”

“Who needs them?” Sam nudged Yuri with his shoulder, and the two of them laughed mirthlessly. “Is there anything I can do to help?”

Yuri shook his head. “Sorry again by the way. I never should have kissed you, but I was drunk and feeling alone, and you were there. It doesn’t mean I’m still in love with you.”

Sam stared straight ahead. “I never thought it did.”

“Is that why you and Nathan…?”

“No. It isn’t. We had some other issues. I’m sure it will work out.” He wasn’t so sure, really, but it seemed like the only thing to say.
